Malacañang of the North

Another must-see tourist spot when you're in Paoay, Ilocos Norte is the Malacañang of the North (Malacanang ti Amianan in Ilocano). You can't find it on the road-side, but signs and directions are aplenty so it's pretty hard to miss.

Malacañang of the North is a sprawling house on a 5-hectare property with a great view of Paoay Lake. It was where the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos and his family lived whenever they were up north. The place has long since been transformed into a museum that displays plenty of Marcos memorabilia.

It's been renovated a few times, and this is how it looked like when we visited early last year:

There were a lot of tourists that day, so it was pretty difficult to get decent shots...

One of the rooms held several interesting dioramas of Ilocos' tourist destinations.

If you don't like being in crowded areas like us, you can walk through the house, away from the busy tour groups. There are a few spots there that have an awesome view of the lake, where you can spend a few relaxing moments breathing in the fresh air. They're very easy to find. ;-)
